My Pet Chicken has positioned itself to take advantage of the backyard chicken craze by offering a wide variety of items for small-scale chicken operations. That includes things like coops, pens and yes, chicken diapers.
Founded in 2005, My Pet Chicken had about $2 million in sales last year. That earned them a spot on the Inc. 5000 list, which tracks the most promising start-up businesses in the country.
Their sweet spot is customers who want to raise chickens as a hobby. Many hatcheries and chicken-supply businesses won’t ship items in the small size that the owner of a backyard coop would need, so My Pet Chicken has found a niche in catering to hobby chicken enthusiasts.
The business was founded when the wife wanted to make a little extra money as a stay-at-home mom. The idea started to really take off, so the husband quit his job as an IT director to help out. When their website started to really hum with sales, the couple was free to move from New Jersey, where they had been living, to North Carolina, where they were both raised.
